Malik Luckett

To continue in Lewis Thomason’s celebrating and honoring of Black History Month, we are pleased to highlight our own Malik Luckett, an associate in the firm’s Memphis office.  Malik focuses his practice in the areas of general civil litigation and healthcare liability and is also branching into criminal law.

A native Memphian. Malik grew up valuing education as exemplified by his father who is a seventh-grade teacher and coach, and his mother who is a special education administrator and leader. He graduated White Station High School. Malik was involved in student government as the senior class reporter and excelled in golf and choir. With a strong love for learning instilled in him from childhood, Malik set out to be an attorney. In pursuit of that goal, he turned down a number of opportunities to play collegiate golf in order to attend the state flagship university, the University of Tennessee, where he believed that he would get a superior undergraduate education to set him up for success in law school, and it did just that. While in college, Malik pledged the nationally recognized and respected Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.  Malik is proud to have been elected as the Polemarch for the Mu Rho Chapter, the chapter’s highest office.

Malik graduated from the University of Tennessee with a bachelor’s degree in political science and a minor in Africana Studies and earned his juris doctorate at the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law.  While in law school, Malik worked as a judicial extern for Judge Mark S. Norris of the United States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee, an extern for the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Tennessee, and a student attorney in the University of Memphis Neighborhood Preservation Clinic.

Malik was very active at law school serving as Notes Editor of the University of Memphis Law Review, a member of the Constance Baker Motley National Mock Trial Team, Senior Student Justice of the Honor Council, a Student Ambassador, a member of the Black Law Students Association, a member of Street Law, and a volunteer in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistant Clinic, which was designed to help indigent clients meet their tax obligations.

Malik’s commitment to public service and the bar continues as he is a member of the Memphis Bar Association, the Tennessee Bar Association, and The Order of Barristers. Malik has received numerous honors as a standout intellectual, student, orator, and advocate. His honors include receiving the Robert L. J. Spence, Jr. Moot Court Award, Clinical Legal Education Association Outstanding Externship Student Award, CourtCall Award for Excellence in Advocacy, Top 5 Oral Advocate Award for the Mock Trial Competition, CALI Award for Excellence (also known as the highest grade in a specific subject matter) in Trial Advocacy, Dean’s Pro Bono Award, and the Scott Marston Service Award. This year, Malik serves as coach for the Houston High School mock trial team.

Lewis Thomason is proud and grateful that Malik is an associate with the firm and thrilled to continue to support Malik as a Lewis Thomason trailblazer and as he continues to make Black history.
