Al Harvey named 2017 Best of the Bar Lifetime Achievement Award winner

This year’s Best of the Bar Lifetime Achievement Award goes to a man who colleagues say exemplifies true leadership in the courtroom, in the community and as a retired Marine general.

Harvey-0087Albert C. Harvey, a senior shareholder at the Memphis offices of Lewis Thomason, has spent his nearly 50-year career defending doctors accused of medical malpractice, a controversial congressman, Big Tobacco and some of the most iconic buildings in town.

After graduating from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1967, Harvey worked as a law clerk for Tennessee Supreme Court Judge Larry Creson for one year before joining what was then Thomason, Crawford and Hendrix as the firm’s first associate.

Harvey’s career with Lewis Thomason was shared with his duties as an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, from which he recently retired with the rank of Major General. Harvey has taken that experience to the classroom, initiating the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law’s first course on National Security Law.

Harvey has also given back to the legal profession by serving in leadership positions with the American Bar Association at the local, state and national levels. That service will continue when Harvey takes on the role as head of the Senior Lawyers Division two years from now.

Harvey will be honored at the annual Best of the Bar awards ceremony Tuesday, March 7, at Opera Memphis, from 5:30-8 p.m. Gold Sponsor is First Tennessee. Bar Sponsor is Blue Sky Couriers. Automotive Sponsor is Jaguar Land Rover Bluff City. Supporting Event Sponsor is Behind the Scenes.
