John King Talks About the “Great Elephant Caper of 1978”

In the February issue of DICTA, Jack H. McCall’s “The Last Word” asked John King to tell readers about the “great elephant caper of 1978”.

This happened during Lamar Alexander’s 1978 gubernatorial campaign. Lamar had asked me to help him, so I was responsible for Lamar’s campaign for Knox County and several of the surrounding counties. Lamar’s opponent was Jake Butcher. The Butcher campaign was well financed and they were active and organized – a tough opponent. See the full article in February’s issue of DICTA on page 31.
