Meet the Barrister – John Craig Howell

A periodic Q & A session with a Lewis Thomason (LT) lawyer

Lewis Thomason: What is your favorite game or sport to watch and play?
John Craig Howell: It’s really hard to choose between football or basketball as a favorite sport to watch. But, nothing beats an NBA playoff game. Last place would be watching an MLB game on TV. That’s torture. As far as playing goes, I love a good pickup basketball game.

Lewis Thomason: How many pairs of shoes do you own?
John Craig Howell: I counted. That’s too many.

Lewis Thomason: What would you do if you won the lottery?
John Craig Howell: Certainly, I wouldn’t quit my day job. But if my billable hours hit the tank and LT forced me out, I would buy majority ownership in the Titans.

Lewis Thomason: What shows are on your DVR?
John Craig Howell: Black-ish, Modern Family, every episode of The Wire remastered in HD, and a bunch of stuff from the Viceland channel because I’m very hip.

Lewis Thomason: If you were ruler of your own country what would be the first law you would introduce?
John Craig Howell: Pass.

Lewis Thomason: Star Wars or Star Trek?
John Craig Howell: Star Wars all day. I’ve never seen a single Star Trek episode or movie.

Lewis Thomason: What is one thing that should be taught in school that isn’t already?
John Craig Howell: Coding. They may already teach that in some places but it seems like it will be as universal as reading, writing, ‘rithmetic someday.

Lewis Thomason: If you could bring back one musician from the dead, who would it be and why?
John Craig Howell: The trick here is you don’t want to bring back someone who died young but might have gone on to make embarrassing music and ruin his/her legacy. I also have to rule out Tupac due to the outside chance he’s still alive. So who lived long enough to not be terrible and could still go on to make great music after being reanimated by me? Prince. He could have lived at least another 150 years before doing something that wasn’t cool.

Lewis Thomason: What do you enjoy most about being a lawyer?
John Craig Howell: I really enjoy providing consultation and advising people. Whether it’s a client, friend, family member, or an acquaintance, I like being a guy that someone thinks of when they want an opinion on something they’re going through legally, in business, at work, etc. As long as it doesn’t have to do with taxes. I don’t mess with that. Call Eric Butler.

Lewis Thomason: What famous person do you admire and why?
John Craig Howell: Besides famous radio and internet personality David Changas, I would have to say that I admire former President Obama. I don’t mean for this to be a political take, but he’s a phenomenal public speaker, is graceful under pressure, and appears to be comfortable in any surrounding.
